Caught in a bad romance: Cops cripple love scam syndicate with four arrests

MELAKA: Melaka police have crippled a “love scam” syndicate with the arrest of three Nigerian men and an Indonesian woman at a condominium in Klebang here.

Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the suspects were picked up during separate raids on three rented units at the condominium on Tuesday (August 12).

“The syndicate is believed to have been operating for the past six months, targeting victims in Indonesia, Philippines and locals,” he said on Wednesday (August 13).

DCP Dzulkhairi said the four suspects, aged between 39 and 47, had misused student visas to enter and remain in the country.

He said investigations revealed that the syndicate members used fictitious identities on social media to dupe victims into transferring money into e-wallet accounts controlled by them.

DCP Dzulkhairi said his team also seized two laptops, eight mobile phones and a pen drive worth about RM15,000 during the raids.

He added that all four suspects have been remanded for 14 days to assist in investigations.
