2026 Budget to align with 13th Malaysia Plan goals, says minister

PUTRAJAYA: The 2026 Budget will align with the objectives of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), says Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.

He said that the main focus points will include high-growth sectors like the semiconductor industry, energy transition initiatives, and the Islamic economy.

The Finance Minister II then said that the government will outline key measures to "raise both the ceiling and the floor", emphasising inclusive growth and good governance practices.

"These include the semiconductor industry, energy transition initiatives, and the Islamic economy, all of which will continue to receive strong government backing.

"I am confident that the many industry representatives present today will contribute constructive proposals," he said at the 2026 Budget Consultation Council on Thursday (Aug 7).

Over 300 participants from the private sector, chambers of commerce, NGOs, economists, top industry players, and civil servants attended the session.

The 2026 Supply Bill (Budget) is scheduled to be tabled in October, according to Parliament's meeting agenda.

Amir Hamzah added that the government will continue to empower micro, small, and medium enterprises and start-ups to produce products and services proudly labelled "Made by Malaysia".

The minister said the digital and Artificial Intelligence (AI) agenda will remain a key focus, in line with efforts to foster innovation and drive value-based economic growth.

"As part of efforts to 'raise the floor', the government remains committed to improving the quality of public services for the rakyat.

"This aligns with the goals of the 13MP, particularly in reforming the education and healthcare sectors," he said.

He acknowledged that addressing structural imbalances in the economy is challenging.

"At times, policies introduced may be unpopular, but they are necessary as they bring long-term benefits to the people.

Importantly, any fiscal reforms undertaken will never come at the expense of the rakyat’s well-being," he said.
