SIBU: Local F3000 powerboat racing used to be a drab affair – until a woman joined the fray.
For 23-year-old Jennin Christine Luntee, breaking into the male-dominated world of powerboat racing was not just about the adrenaline rush.
Rather, it was about proving that women belong in every lane of the sport.
Currently interning as a teacher, the Sarawak-born racer has been steadily making waves in the local powerboat racing scene, particularly after earning a coveted spot in the F3000 category which is typically dominated by seasoned male racers.
Jennin’s journey began in Kapit where she was raised.
Her father, a former powerboat racer himself, was instrumental in nurturing her interest.
“From a young age, I was exposed to powerboats and engine sports.
“I followed my dad to races and helped out as part of his crew. That’s how my passion grew,” said Jennin, who is also a member of the Sarawak Women Rugby 14s team.
Both sides of her family have strong ties to river life.
Her mother and many of her relatives have been involved in boating, a legacy that also fuelled Jennin’s ambition.
But while the exposure came early with family ties, the decision to compete was hers alone.
“The inspiration came from within. I’ve always wanted to try something challenging.
“People often say powerboat racing is for men but I believe this sport is for anyone who’s passionate,” she said in an interview.
Jennin’s grit saw her break into the F3000 category, a significant step up from her earlier experience testing her father’s 18-horsepower boat just for fun.
The F3000 boats, by comparison, run at 280 horsepower and require a high skill level and physical endurance.
She admitted that entering the field as a woman was not easy.
“From the start, people hesitated to give me a chance.
“But when I finally got my opportunity in the F3000 race, I gave it everything I had,” she said.
Although Jennin raced in the solo category, she has yet to bag an individual win under her name.
But she has been part of the winning Fernandez Team alongside her father and uncle.
In the recent F3000 race in Kuantan, she competed against a field of all-male racers in a boat sponsored by the organiser, Robert Michael Fernandez.
She said more needs to be done to support women in motorsports.
