Man nabbed with protected animals in bag

PETALING JAYA: Authorities have thwarted an attempt to smuggle protected animals through the Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1.

The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency said in a statement yesterday that a suspect was arrested at 10pm on Saturday after trying to smuggle the animals to Hyderabad, India.

“Scans on his luggage showed them containing the animals. The 38-year-old had been arrested for further investigation.

“Checks on the luggage led to the discovery of two grey langurs, two siamangs and two armadillos,” the agency said yesterday, adding that the animals were protected species and worth about RM73,000.

“This effort mirrors the commitment by the agency in combating animal smuggling that could affect the good name of the country and its biodiversity,” it said.
