MUAR: The month-long National Day and flag-flying tradition is not just for symbolic purposes but showcases the strong spirit of unity among Malaysians, says the Communications Minister.
Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said for the past 68 years since independence, this togetherness formed through the Federal Constitution has ensured the nation’s peace and stability.
As such, he urged everyone to proudly fly the Jalur Gemilang be it at their homes, vehicles, offices or schools.
Fahmi, who is the National Day and Malaysia Day main committee chairman, urged the people to also join in the 1 Rumah 1 Jalur Gemilang campaign to boost their spirit of patriotism.
He was speaking at the launch of the 2025 National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Dataran Tanjung Emas here yesterday, marking the beginning of the nationwide celebration of patriotism and unity.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim later flagged off the 2025 Jalur Gemilang Merdeka Expedition Convoy, which will travel across the country carrying the message of unity and patriotism.
Fahmi said each year, different ways were used to instil patriotism among the people, adding that Muar was chosen for the launch due to its historic significance dating back to the Portuguese invasion of Melaka in 1511.
“This place was also known as Fortaleza de Muar or Bentayan Fort which protected Muar from the enemy due to its strategic location,” he added.
Anwar said that the national day should not be limited to gaining independence from colonial powers but must also include the liberation of the people’s minds and understanding.
“Merdeka is not just about breaking free from the British, but also liberating our way of thinking.
“We must rekindle the spirit of liberation and uplift the dignity of our people and our nation,” he said.
