KUALA LUMPUR The media plays an important role in preserving national harmony and security with its ability to win hearts and minds, says Tan Sri Razarudin Husain.
The Inspector-General of Police said the close partnership between the police and the media is based on a shared civic responsibility in imparting information accurately so that justice is preserved in any situation.
"Media platforms have a unique power to cross physical barriers, influence thoughts and win hearts and minds to spur support in ensuring the safety and prosperity of this country.
"The media is among the pillars and hopes of the police; not merely conveyors of news and information but also serves as a source of truth and justice to the public," he said in his speech during the IGP appreciation ceremony with the media in Bukit Aman on Monday (May 26).
Razarudin also paid tribute to journalists covering the crime beat.
"The media plays an important role as the 'fourth estate'. At the same time they are also observers who monitor our service delivery and ensure improvements in the management of the force are always being conducted with integrity," he said.
Razarudin also expressed his appreciation for the media's constant support to disseminate accurate information.
He presented certificates of appreciation to 30 journalists during the ceremony, including The Star's Farik Zolkepli and Justin Zack.
Among top police officers who attended the ceremony were Deputy IGP Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay and Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.
