Old mortar shell discovered at Penang construction site


GEORGE TOWN: An old mortar shell was discovered at construction site in Jalan Seri Tanjung Pinang here on Monday (May 19) night.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said police received a call at 7.42pm from the public who found an object suspected to be an explosive device at the construction site.

"A team from the Bomb Disposal Unit were dispatched to the location to deactivate the bomb.

"A check by the unit confirmed that the bomb was an unexploded ordnance (UXO), remnant of World War II," he said.

ACP Abdul Rozak said the bomb would be disposed on Tuesday (May 20).

He said the area where the bomb was found was secure and no casualties or damage to property were reported during the accident," he added.
