Fisherman missing after collision near Pulau Klang: Search operation underway

PORT KLANG: Two fishermen were injured and one went missing after a local fishing vessel rammed into their fibreglass boat at 0.3 nautical miles north of Pulau Klang.

The accident happened at 11.00pm on Saturday (May 17).

The two injured fishermen were rescued by another fibreglass boat which was in the area.

The third fisherman was still missing at press time.

Selangor Maritime director Captain (Maritime) Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said an emergency notification was received from a fisherman who witnessed the incident.

"The man alleged that the vessel (which hit the fishermen's boat) fled soon after the collision.

"The Selangor maritime operation centre immediately arranged for a patrol boat to go to the location to carry out an early search for the missing victim, Zamri Mohd Harun,56.

"He is believed to be lost at sea, and was last seen wearing a bluish red shirt and a blue pair of pants," added Abdul Muhaimin.

Both the rescued victims, Suzamri Mohd Sabri, 56 and Yazid Harun, 52, were brought to the Selangor Maritime Department jetty and sent to the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital Klang for treatment at 12.35am on Sunday (May 18).

Abdul Muhaimin said the victims were injured and suffered from exhaustion.

"A search and rescue operation coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre Johor Baru has been activated at 12.10am (on Sunday) and a search is ongoing with the cooperation of the Fire and Rescue Department and the Marine Police," he added.

He said Sunday's search involved 20 personnel and three vessels covering an ocean range of 13 nautical miles per square.

He reminded the maritime community and members of the public to always prioritise safety when carrying out activities at sea, especially at night or when the weather is unpredictable.

Any complaints regarding a breach of maritime law or an emergency at sea can be immediately reported to the Selangor Maritime Operations Centre at 03-31760627 or reported through 999.
