PUTRAJAYA: The independent special task force set up by the Transport Ministry to investigate the mishap that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel has one month to complete its investigation, it was revealed.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil (pic) said the Cabinet decided yesterday that the report must be completed within that timeframe and presented to the Cabinet before any decision is made.
He said the independent special task force will examine the non-criminal aspects of the accident such as vehicle-related matters while the police continues its investigation.
Fahmi also said all nine FRU personnel had group insurance and their families or next of kin would be eligible to receive the claims soon.
“The Home Minister, who is visiting five families in Ipoh and Teluk Intan, will hand over RM2,000 in emergency aid to the affected families,” the government spokesman told his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing here.
On another matter, Fahmi said the Education Ministry will announce the number of schools that have been permitted to conduct online learning during the upcoming Asean Summit, with private companies in Kuala Lumpur encouraged to allow remote work.
He said several heads of state will be in the capital city for the Asean and Asean-GCC summits from May 25 to 27 with specific routes allocated for their travel.
Fahmi advised the public to use public transport during that period.
He said a circular from the Public Service Department was released last week permitting remote work for the civil servants concerned.
On the 2014 Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 tragedy, Fahmi said the Cabinet had reviewed a statement from the International Civil Aviation Organisation, which ruled that Russia was responsible for the downing of the plane over Ukraine that killed all 298 passengers and crew.
He said the Transport Ministry is expected to issue a statement in response, coordinated with Wisma Putra, by tomorrow.
Flight MH17, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014, was shot down over eastern Ukraine amid fighting between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian forces.
