Youths claim trial to causing grievous hurt, rioting in Seremban

SEREMBAN: Five friends claimed trial at the Magistrate's court here to charges of causing grievous hurt to a secondary school boy and rioting.

Nur Ezwan Ezanie Rohaizad, 24, Nur Ariq Farhan Ismail, 21, Shazrin Shah Mohd Norazham, 19 and two others aged 17 pleaded not guilty after the charges were read to them before magistrate Nurul Saqinah Rosli.

For the first charge, they were charged with causing grievous hurt to the 17-year-old male victim, alongside other suspects who were still at large.

The alleged offence was committed at the Kg Sentosa Jaya futsal court around 11pm on May 8.

They were charged under Section 325 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same legislation, which carries a jail term of up to seven years and a fine upon conviction.

For the second, they were charged with rioting at the same place and time.

For this, they were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to two years or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor P. Rubini then offered the accused bail of RM7,000 each for the causing grievous hurt charge and RM6,000 for rioting.

Razqeeyanur Sarini Salzali from the Legal Aid Department, representing the five, pleaded for a lower bail.

She said the three accused earned between RM1,000 and RM1,500 a month. The young offenders, she said, would be bailed by their mothers who earned RM1,000 each doing odd jobs.

The court then offered a bail of RM4,500 with one surety to each of the accused and ordered them to stay away from the victim. She then fixed June 16 for mention.

Lawyers Hanif Hassan and Muhammad Wajih Zakwan kept a watching brief for the victim.

A video and photos showing the victim with a bloodied face had gone viral after the alleged incident. It is believed to have been taken after he was assaulted by a group of men.

The incident is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding in which one of the suspects thought the victim had injured his younger brother.
