Malaysia Airlines, Batik Air announce flight suspensions due to India-Pakistan fighting

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Airlines has suspended flights to and from Amritsar, India due to evolving security and operational concerns.

The national flag carrier said this on Wednesday (May 7) following the closure of Amritsar Airport from May 7 to May 9.

Malaysia Airlines said passenger and crew safety remains its top priority, and added that it is monitoring the situation closely.

“We will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure safe and reliable operations,” the airline said.

It added that it had re-routed two of its long-haul flights following the closure of Pakistani airspace.

Flights MH2 to London Heathrow and MH22 to Paris Charles de Gaulle were diverted on Tuesday (May 6) for a refuelling stop in Doha, Qatar, before continuing to their destinations.

Meanwhile, Batik Air announced the cancellation of several flights to and from Lahore, Pakistan, and Amritsar, India, due to ongoing airspace restrictions from heightened tensions between India and Pakistan.

In a press statement issued on Wednesday, the airline confirmed that flights on May 7 and 8, 2025, have been affected.

The affected services are as follows:

Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Lahore (LHE): Flight OD131 on May 7 and 8 (5.35pm local time)

Lahore (LHE) – Kuala Lumpur (KUL): Flight OD132 on May 7 and 8 (9.35pm local time)

Kuala Lumpur (KUL) – Amritsar (ATQ): Flight OD271 on May 7 (6.40pm local time)

Amritsar (ATQ) – Kuala Lumpur (KUL): Flight OD272 on May 7 (11.05pm local time)

Batik Air stated that the safety and wellbeing of its passengers and crew remain its highest priority and that it is working closely with relevant authorities while monitoring the situation.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding,” the airline said, assuring that updates will be provided as new information becomes available.

India attacked Pakistan and Pakistani Kashmir, and Pakistan said it had shot down five Indian fighter jets in the worst fighting in more than two decades between the nuclear-armed enemies.
