Passers-by find deceased baby in box at roadside stall

KOTA KINABALU: Passers-by made a shocking discovery on Tuesday afternoon (April 15) when they opened a box left at an unnumbered roadside stall at Batu 13, Jalan Jeroco here.

Inside was the body of a fully-formed baby boy, wrapped in cloth.

Lahad Datu district police chief Asst Comm Dzulbaharin Ismail said police were alerted shortly after the discovery at around 2pm.

"The baby boy was already deceased when found. His body has been sent to the Forensics Department of Lahad Datu Hospital for a post-mortem," he said on Wednesday (April 16).

He added that police are investigating the case under Section 318 of the Penal Code for concealing a birth and disposing of the body, an offence that carries a penalty of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

Police are appealing to the public for information that may assist with the investigation.

Anyone with details is urged to contact Investigating Officer Insp Mohd Damsa Dahlan at 089-881255 or report to the nearest police station.

The discovery has since gone viral on social media.
