Man held for threatening his mother with a parang

KOTA KINABALU: A man was arrested after he allegedly threatened to attack his mother with a parang at their home in Tawau.

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said the man, who is in his 30s, brandished a machete at his mother at about 11.10pm on Monday.

The man’s younger brother immediately reported the incident to the police, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspect, he said.

“The suspect was arrested along the sidewalk of a building in the city,” he said, adding that the suspect had no prior criminal record, but the police believe he is aggressive.

The police also found out that he had previously caused damage to a neighbour’s property during an episode of aggressiveness.

ACP Jasmin said the suspect is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for making criminal threats.

“Members of the public should not remain silent if there is a threat within a family.

“Report it immediately to the police to ensure early action for the safety of all parties,” he added.
