Sabah approves free insurance scheme for 3.5 million residents

KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah State Cabinet has approved a new free insurance scheme that will benefit approximately 3.5 million Sabahans.

The decision was made during the Cabinet Meeting chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor on Wednesday (April 9).

Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the scheme, which provides personal accident insurance coverage, will be available at no cost to eligible individuals for three years, from May 1, 2025, to April 30, 2028.

“Implemented through the state-owned company Progressive Insurance Bhd, the scheme ensures that every Sabah resident, from infants to those up to 80 years old, will automatically receive free personal accident insurance worth up to RM10,000, along with a death benefit of RM500,” Masidi said in a statement after the Cabinet meeting.

The insurance claims process is designed for efficiency, with payouts made within 14 to 30 days after submission of complete documentation.

“This initiative reflects the Sabah government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of our people, particularly those in the B40 group, while easing their financial burdens,” Masidi added.
