Road to Mulu National Park to boost access, says Sarawak Premier

MIRI: The Sarawak government will build a road connecting Miri directly to Mulu within two years, says state Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

The journey from Miri to Mulu would only take one and a half hours when the road is completed, he said.

“There is no other place in Malaysia that has two Unesco sites. Only Miri; it has Unesco sites in Mulu and Niah,” said Abang Johari.

The overland route typically involves a combination of driving and boat rides, taking approximately eight to ten hours, depending on conditions.

Alternatively, the most convenient and fastest way to reach Mulu from Miri is by air.

MASwings operates daily flights that take about 30 minutes.

On this, Abang Johari said the Sarawak government will build or provide road infrastructure from Miri to Marudi, and we will build a new road from Marudi directly to Long Terawan and to Mulu.

Abang Johari said this at the Hari Raya Aidilfitri Ceremony at the Miri Indoor Stadium on Saturday (April 5) night.

Additionally, he said with the deep sea port being built in Miri, it would further increase the number of tourists to northern Sarawak who come by cruise ship.

"God willing, in two years, the deep sea port for northern Sarawak will be completed. The question is what are the implications for the economy in the north.

This means that import and export business from materials in northern Sarawak can be exported through the port.

"Secondly, because this port is an inland port, it can certainly attract cruise ships to bring tourists to northern Sarawak. What I mentioned is a cruise where this ship can bring tourists. Usually, this ship carries around 2,000 to 3,000 passengers," he said.

Phase One of the Miri port project, Abang Johari said, is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. It also has the potential to become a major port that connects trade routes in northern Sarawak to the global market.
