Duo escape death after car swept away by strong currents in Kota Marudu

KOTA KINABALU: Two men had a brush with death after their vehicle was swept away by strong currents while attempting to drive across a low concrete road spanning a river in Kampung Sungai Simpangan, Kota Marudu, on Wednesday night (March 26).

One of them was found clinging to the roof of their pickup before firemen rescued him, while the other was reported missing after trying to escape the vehicle.

Fortunately, the second man was later found safe by rescuers at the riverbank.

The 9.08pm incident prompted an emergency response from the Kota Marudu Fire and Rescue Department, which arrived at the scene about 10 minutes later.

Operations commander senior fire officer II Jakri Bahar said a search and rescue operation was conducted until both victims were located.

The operation ended at 10.24pm, involving six personnel, a fire engine, and a support vehicle.
