Enliven mosques with knowledge-based, religious activities, says PM

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Muslims have been urged to enliven mosques through various knowledge-based and religious activities, particularly for women and young people.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said this was due to the vital role mosques play in developing and empowering the Muslim community in the country.

At the same time, he urged all parties to refrain from using mosques as a platform to spread hatred or incite prejudice, which had become increasingly widespread and excessive.

"Enliven mosques… hold learning classes and create spaces for women and young people. Let them choose what interests them to expand their knowledge.

"Do not use Islam only to divide and attack… instead, provide understanding before making decisions… understanding based on the Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW.

"This country's advancement is not merely due to technology and development… Yes, they are important… but beyond progress and material wealth, there is kindness, good manners, and morals.

"In this holy month of Ramadan, make the mosque a centre (of knowledge)," he said at the opening of Masjid Jamek Perai here Tuesday (March 18).

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid were also present.

The Prime Minister said that besides maintaining ties among Muslims, it was also important to respect and uphold good relations with the non-Muslim community in the country.

"It is fine to have different opinions, (but) there is no need to insult, curse, or put others down. There should be differences of opinion, but do not be quick to judge," he said.

At the event, Anwar also agreed to contribute RM100,000 to Masjid Jamek Perai to strengthen its role as a centre for religious activities and the spiritual development of children in the area.

Masjid Jamek Perai, built in 1979, underwent full refurbishment on March 29, 2021, replacing the old structure at a cost of RM5.5mil. - Bernama
