KUALA LUMPUR: Some RM721mil worth of e-waste was seized and 47 people were detained following a series of raids in four states.

General Operations Force (GOF) Central Brigade commander Senior Asst Comm Hakemal Hawari said 12 raids were conducted in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor in an operation codenamed "Ops Hazard" recently.

"Seven raids were conducted in Selangor, two raids each in Negri Sembilan and Johor, and a raid in Melaka.

"Those detained were five locals and 42 foreigners.

"The foreigners detained were from Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China and Singapore," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 18).

The cases are being investigated under the Quality of Environment Act 1974 and the Immigration Act 1963, he said.

"The raids were conducted by the GOF along with the police's Air Wing, the Department of Environment (DOE) and the respective district police headquarters," he added.

SAC Hakemal said police through the GOF would conduct similar operations in the future to ensure the safety and security of the people.

"We also urge those with information on any smuggling activity to contact the police as soon possible," he said.
