KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 635 notices have been issued for various offences following inspections involving 6,605 buses nationwide, says Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli.
The Road Transport Department (JPJ) director-general said the inspections were conducted in a special operation held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations.
"Some of the offences detected were driving while using a mobile phone and driving for four hours without a co-driver.
"Among other offences detected were connected to driving and vehicle licences," he told reporters following an operation at Terminal Bas Bersepadu (TBS) on Tuesday (Jan 28) night.
He said the operation was conducted at 54 bus depots as well as 28 main terminals around the country from Jan 20.
"Our officers were also placed undercover on 169 buses.
"Through going undercover, our officers were able to detect offences by bus drivers, which include driving while using a mobile phone.
"Our focused inspection and enforcement actions are in line with Sections 22 and 23 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 and the Road Transport Act 1987," he added.
The department along with the National Anti-Drug Agency also conducted urine tests on 420 drivers during the same period, to ensure drivers are competent and adhered to rules and regulations, Aedy Fadly said.
"Six drivers failed the tests.
"We will not compromise in taking action against bus companies, their owners or drivers who still break the laws and regulations.
"We will continue to take stern action to ensure the safety of all road users," he said.
