No footage found on dashcam in senior cop's car, court hears

IPOH: No footage was found on the dashcam mounted in the vehicle of a senior police officer charged with murdering a secondary school student in Meru Raya here.

Ipoh police's criminal investigation department senior investigating officer Asst Supt S. Dasarathan said that the car used by the accused, Deputy Supt Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, was examined and a dashcam along with a memory card was found in the car.

"Ipoh traffic investigating officer Insp Jong Pit Chao was instructed to inspect the vehicle and it was confirmed that a dashcam along with accessories, including a memory card, was found," he said in a written statement presented before Judge Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gucharan Singh Preet on Friday (Jan 10).

The 33rd prosecution witness said the dashcam and memory card were seized as evidence.

"I received the dashcam and the memory card from Insp Jong and marked the memory card 'AC5.'

"Checks on the dashcam and memory card revealed no recordings related to the Dec 15, 2023 incident," he said.

He said from forensic analysis of the memory card, police successfully retrieved 130 video files dated from Nov 4, 2022, to Dec 19, 2022.

"The recordings were only until Dec 19, 2022, and no recordings were made between Dec 20, 2022, and Dec 15, 2023.

However, he said his preliminary examination was inconclusive and further forensic analysis was required.

ASP Dasarathan also said toxicology reports showed no traces of alcohol or drugs in the victim or the suspect.

The investigation paper was initially opened by Insp Jong on Dec 15, 2023, and taken over by Ipoh police criminal investigation department senior investigating officer ASP Chua Sze Yuan.

On Dec 18, 2023, the investigation paper was taken over by ASP Dasarathan.

The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz while the accused was represented by lawyers M. Athimulan, Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid and Aiman Hakim Kamaruzzaman.

DSP Mohd Nazri was charged with murdering 17-year-old schoolboy Mohammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie at the intersection of Jalan Taman Jati/Jalan Pekeliling Meru Indah, near SMK Jati, between 12.05pm and 12.40pm on Dec 15, 2023.
