More than 100 foreign workers nabbed for immigration offences in NYE sweep

JOHOR BARU: A late-night raid on a construction workers’ settlement in Masai has netted some 105 foreign nationals violating immigration laws.

The Johor Immigration Department’s Ops Sapu swept up 454 locals and foreign nationals, leading to the arrest of 105 individuals.

State director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus of the operation was conducted at 1.15am on Wednesday (Jan 1) to root out migrant workers that violated the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

“The enforcement operation involved a collaboration between officers from the Johor Immigration Enforcement Department and 50 officers from the Sultan Iskandar Building Office.

“This operation was part of the department’s strategy to address the presence of foreigners violating immigration laws and regulations, rendering them illegal immigrants in the state,” he said in a statement.

Mohd Rusdi added that those detained included 20 men and four women from Indonesia, 16 men from Myanmar, one man from Pakistan, and 64 men from Bangladesh, aged between 20 and 56.

“They have been placed at the Pekan Nenas Immigration Detention Centre for further investigation and action,” he said.

Mohd Rusdi added that the Johor Immigration Department will continue its enforcement efforts to combat immigration offences in the state.

He also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to taking firm action against employers, property owners, and individuals found employing or harbouring illegal immigrants.
