Umno's Shamsuddin Ghaffar appointed as senator at Perak state assembly


IPOH: Ipoh Barat Umno division chairman Datuk Shamsuddin Abd Ghaffar has been re-elected as a senator at Dewan Negara at the Perak state assembly sitting on Thursday (Dec 5).

Shamsuddin, 75, has been a senator since 2022.

The Opposition also submitted a candidate, Perak PAS treasurer Ismail Arifin.

Shamsuddin obtained 33 votes, while Ismail Arifin had 25.

A total of 58 out of 59 assemblymen voted, with Opposition leader Razman Zakaria absent as he has been hospitalised.

Shamsuddin has served as an Ipoh city councillor.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad (BN-Kota Tampan) proposed the motion to nominate Shamsuddin, which was seconded by Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin (PH-Sungai Rapat).

Shamsuddin's previous senatorial term ended on Nov 19.
