Motorist killed by falling container in Penang

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A woman was killed on the spot when a container being transported on a trailer lorry toppled and crushed her car near Bukit Tengah here.

The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Lee Zi Rou, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is learnt the woman was waiting at the Jalan Kebun Sireh-Jalan Bukit Tengah traffic lights when the lorry coming from the opposite direction made a sharp left turn.

This reportedly caused the container it was carrying to overbalance, detach and fall on the victim's car in the 9.15am Wednesday (Nov 13) incident.

The woman was in the car alone and reportedly on her way to work.

The container and wreckage of the car left both lanes of the road blocked temporarily.

Several other vehicles were also damaged, with another driver sustaining injuries and being taken to the hospital.

The injured victim, identified as Tan Chou Theng, 25, was rescued by passersby before rescuers arrived at the scene.

Police are investigating.
