Teo Nie Ching elected new Johor DAP chief


JOHOR BARU: Teo Nie Ching has been elected as the new Johor DAP chairman, replacing Liew Chin Tong who held the post for four terms since 2014.

Teo, who is also Wanita DAP chief and publicity secretary, emerged third in the Johor party polls with 692 votes, behind Ng Siam Luang (762) and Andrew Chen Kah Eng (717).

In her speech at the Johor DAP convention here, Teo said nine of the 20 committee members (including five appointees) are women.

She said it was an honour to be the first woman to serve as Johor DAP chairman.

Teo said she was proud to join the ranks of only two other female chairmen in DAP's history.

Liew, who ranked sixth after receiving 633 votes in the election, previously announced that he would nominate Teo as the new chairman if he made the state DAP committee.

A total of 34 candidates, including several first-time contenders, contested in the party election here, vying for the 15 seats in the committee.

A total of 1,121 party members took part but only 1,090 votes were counted as there were 30 spoilt votes and one unreturned vote.

Committee members who were re-elected include Chen, Johor Jaya assemblyman Liow Cai Tung, Penggaram assemblyman Gan Peck Cheng, Senai assemblyman Wong Bor Yang, Jementah assemblyman Ng Kor Sim and Kluang MP Wong Shu Qi.

Meanwhile, former Johor DAP chairman and former Skudai assemblyman Dr Boo Cheng Hau did not make it into the committee after receiving 543 votes.

Bakri MP Tan Hong Ping, who was also vying for a seat on the committee, received 563 votes and did not make the cut.
