Going solo or forming pact in GE16? Decision must benefit Umno, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: Whether Umno will go solo or form partnerships for the 16th General Election will depend on the party’s strength then, says deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

He said it would be unfair to get the party to decide now for a position which it needs to take for an event that is only happening three years from now.

“A lot of things need to be evaluated before Umno can reach a decision on this.

“If the party’s standing allows us to go solo in the general election, we will decide then. If we need a partner to face the polls, we will decide then too,” he told reporters on Saturday (Aug 24).

He said whether it is going solo or forming an alliance with other coalitions, Umno needs to make a decision that would benefit the party.

“Not only do we want to win, our priority is to form the government. To achieve this, strategic planning must be done and all moves must be properly calculated,” he added.

Mohamad was asked on the issue of “going solo” raised by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in his presidential address at the opening of the general assembly on Friday.

While the party’s previous approach was to “go solo” in elections, Ahmad Zahid had asked delegates whether this would be the best approach, given the current political scenario.

The five-year term of the current unity government ends in 2027.
