KUALA LUMPUR: Disciplinary action has been taken against the police personnel who were suspected of assaulting a disabled e-hailing driver at a hotel in the city in May.
The Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, said the action was promptly taken following an internal investigation by the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) in June.
"Any personnel who committed disciplinary offences face various actions such as a warning, suspension and demotion.
"Action against the personnel in this case have been conducted in the early stages once JIPS concluded an internal investigation.
"The personnel is also under investigation under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing harm," he said when contacted on Wednesday (Aug 14).
The IGP stressed that the police have never protected any officer or personnel who have committed offences.
He was commenting on the case following a statement by lawyer N. Surendran, who questioned the action taken by the police and the Attorney-General's Chambers over the case.
Surendran, who represented disabled e-hailing driver Ong Ing Keong, 48, said there was no action taken against the suspect who injured Ong after two months.
Ong lodged a police report that he was assaulted by a security escort of a VIP when he stopped to pick up a passenger at the hotel near KL Sentral.
On June 5, Razarudin confirmed that police had completed the investigation and referred the investigation paper (IP) to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) for further action.
On July 22, the IP was sent back to the DPP after the police received instructions to further investigate the case.
