Man drowned in Kudat while spearfishing


KOTA KINABALU: A man in his 30s drowned when he was diving and spearfishing at the coastal waters of Simpang Mengayau, Kudat, on Wednesday evening (July 24).

The man was declared dead by the medical officers in the district hospital after efforts to revive him failed.

The Fire and Rescue Department initially received the emergency call about the incident at the popular tourism spot at 7.40pm, and a team was sent from the Kudat fire station.

“It was learnt that the man drowned while fishing underwater. Civilians found him at 7.30pm and tried to revive him before the team from the fire station arrived at 8.16pm.

“The firemen initiated CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) efforts and sent the victim to Kudat hospital using their emergency responder vehicle, where he was pronounced dead by the hospital,” said the Department spokesman.
