Melaka recalls guidebooks over historical errors

MELAKA: Melaka Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Melaka) is recalling all tourist guidebooks following a "blooper" in one of its promotional materials.

A senior official from Tourism Melaka said all the guidebooks will be audited and fact-checked before being recirculated.

"We acknowledge there were glaring mistakes in one of our guidebooks and have taken immediate action to rectify the errors and discontinue the circulation of related materials.

"We have posted an apology on our Facebook page for the oversight," he said on Thursday (July 11).

The official said Tourism Melaka will also summon the publisher of the guidebook to explain where they obtained the historical facts printed in the promotional material.

"We will also call up other publishers who have been commissioned to prepare and print facts on Melaka's past and details relating to tourism," he said.

He said the publisher of the guidebook will also be issued a show cause letter.

"We view the matter seriously," he added.

The official was responding to the slew of alleged historical mistakes in the guidebook recently highlighted by French historian Serge Jardin in his Facebook post.
