Anwar pledges to support civil servants

PUTRAJAYA: The Prime Minister has assured civil servants that he will defend them against those who question them while carrying out their duties.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said for as long as they perform their duties well and responsibly, he will not succumb to pressure from those questioning or criticising civil servants.

"I guarantee you (civil servants) this. For as long as you do what is good and what is right, I will defend you.

"There are instances where action is taken and there is pressure for us to take action against those who carry out their responsibilities.

"I told the Chief Secretary to the Government that we will defend the person because he is carrying out his duties as a public officer," he said at the Finance Ministry’s monthly gathering.

The Prime Minister said his mandate to civil servants was clear: they must carry out their job responsibilities with integrity.

"You have a Prime Minister who will defend you. I will not succumb to pressure. You (civil servants), do your job," he added.
