Senior citizen killed as car and lorry collide in Sabah


KOTA KINABALU: A senior citizen was killed in a head-on collision with a 10-tonne lorry at Batu 8, Kampung Sapong along the Kemabong-Tenom Road on Friday (May 31).

The 66-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer.

According to a Fire and Rescue Services Department statement, a distress call came in at 11.46am on Friday (May 31) and a team was dispatched to the scene.

“The accident involved a lorry carrying four barrels, one containing chlorine, that collided with a car driven by the deceased and carrying one passenger, coming from the opposite direction,” the statement read.

Firemen had to use special equipment to extricate the body from the wreck.

"The passenger, aged 71, suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the Tenom district hospital, while the 46-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt,” the statement added.

The operation concluded at 1.17pm and the victim's body was handed over to the police for further action, it read.
