Fire destroys restaurant in Taman Daya, Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: A restaurant in Taman Daya here was destroyed after a fire broke out on Wednesday morning (May 22).

Tebrau fire station chief Shamsul Khomari said 16 firemen from the Tebrau and Johor Jaya fire stations, as well as the Mount Austin volunteer firefighter team, were deployed upon receiving the call at about 8.58am on Wednesday.

"The restaurant was in operation when the incident happened and there were also customers having their breakfast there.

"There were about four people in the building when the fire broke out, but they managed to escape before the fire spread. No injuries were reported," he said when contacted.

He added that the fire, which destroyed 90% of the building, was believed to have started on the second floor, where the restaurant’s workers live.

"The structure of the building was not affected by the fire, but its interior was destroyed and filled with soot.

"The cause of the fire and total losses are still under investigation," he said, adding that the department managed to control the fire and ended its operation at about 12.20pm.
