Surprise delivery for couple in a rush

Proud pair: Nurul Amira, Muhamad Fauzi and their five-year-old daughter together with their newborn baby girl at a hospital in Johor Baru.

JOHOR BARU: It was an unforgettable moment for a couple here as they welcomed their baby into the world in a car without any medical supervision.

Nurul Amira Jeffri, 29, and her husband Muhamad Fauzi Azmi, 30, were about to rush to the hospital for delivery on May 3 when they ended up welcoming their baby girl in the car instead.

“My husband and I left our apartment at about 4.30am. At that point I was already having contractions for about two hours.

“As we were walking from our unit to the lift, my water broke ... I could already feel the baby’s head when we were in the lift,” she said in an interview.

Nurul Amira said the baby was born just moments after they got into their car.

“Thankfully, the distance between the lift and the car was very short. As soon as I sat in the car, I started pushing. The baby was born within minutes and my husband managed to deliver it.

“My husband, who has fear of blood, set all his fear aside as he delivered our second child,” she said.

The couple, who run a restaurant in Stulang Baru together, then headed to the nearest hospital with their newborn baby.

“Once we arrived at the emergency department, medical staff rushed to our car thinking I was there to give birth.

“They were shocked when they saw me holding my newborn child,” she said, adding that it was an unforgettable moment for them both.

Nurul Amira said she was also overwhelmed when she realised the baby was born in the car belonging to her father, who passed away in December.

“The baby was supposed to be born on May 5, which also happens to be my late father’s birthday.

“He used to joke about having a ‘friend’ to celebrate his birthday with once the baby was born.

“Sadly, he left before he could see her and the baby was born two days before his birthday. “However, it later occurred to me that my child was delivered in his car,” she said.
