BATU PAHAT: Authorities in Johor have seized 11 door mats with images said to depict the Kaabah from a booth at a popular shopping complex on the eve of Hari Raya.

Johor Islamic affairs committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said this comes after the Johor Islamic Department (JAINJ) received a complaint from the public.

"The department launched an operation with the assistance of the police.

"We found 11 door mats believed to have images resembling the Kaabah and seized them," he said when contacted on Saturday (April 13).

He said that the department decided not to issue any statement earlier out of respect for the Hari Raya celebration.

"We have summoned the business owner to provide an explanation and warned them to be more careful," he said.

He advised the public to stay calm and let authorities investigate.

"I hope people do not blow this out of proportion. I would also like to remind businesses to be more careful and ensure that this does not happen again," he said.

He also urged the public to lodge a complaint with the state Islamic department or relevant authorities if they come across such issues instead of posting it on social media.

It is unclear if any police report has been lodged over the matter.

This is the third time a similar issue has occurred in recent weeks nationwide.
