33-year-old in Melaka pleads guilty to robbing, causing injury to elderly woman

MELAKA: A 33-year-old man will spend his Hari Raya in jail after pleading guilty at the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here to robbing and seriously injuring an elderly woman.

Judge Elesabet Paya Wan fixed April 22 to mete out the sentence against Izhar Ismail while the court refused to grant bail to the latter during the proceedings on Monday (April 8).

Izhar, together with two individuals who are still at large, had robbed the handbag containing RM1,500 belonging to Chong Sook Fang, 62 and voluntarily caused hurt to the victim.

The offence was committed at 12.30pm on March 19 at a petrol kiosk in Jalan Malim, Melaka Tengah, where the victim had sustained multiple injuries, requiring her to undergo two corrective surgeries.

The charge against Izhar was framed under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, which provides for a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping, upon conviction.

Prosecution was carried out by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Syazwanie Marizan while Izhar was unrepresented.
