Over 2 million vehicles expected to enter Penang during Raya

GEORGE TOWN: More than two million vehicles are expected to make their way into Penang over the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period, says state deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad.

He said all policemen from the state's traffic department will be on duty during the period to help manage traffic congestion.

"We estimate between 2.2 million and 2.4 million vehicles will be passing our highway just like during other festivals.

"Penang being a tourist hotspot, we expect heavy traffic congestion.

"The increase of about 80% in vehicles compared to the usual 1.3 million vehicles will definitely add to congestion.

"To monitor and help ease the congestion, we will have some 300 traffic policemen, almost the entire detachment, to be on duty," he said on Friday (April 5).
