Labuan's 20-hour blackout caused by underground cable damage

KOTA KINABALU: A damaged Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) underground cable has been identified as the cause of the recent 20-hour blackout that hit most of Labuan.

The power disruption at 4.22pm on Monday (April 1) affected the Old Jetty area, India Mosque, Alliance Bank building, Melati Inn Hotel, Roro ferry terminal, Labuan ferry terminal, Labuan Liberty Port, the Jalan OKK Abdullah area, Post Office Square, Mariner Hotel, Jalan Bunga Anggerik and Jalan Bunga Dahlia.

SESB senior general manager (asset management) Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said an immediate inspection was carried out and once the fault was identified, repair work began at around 7pm on the same day.

The repairs were hampered by heavy rain, which caused work to be suspended at 4am on Tuesday (April 2), he added.

Electricity supply was finally restored at 12.02pm on Tuesday.
