RM5bil worth of durians exported in 2017-2023

Kuala Lumpur: Durians worth RM5.17bil were exported between 2017 and 2023, says Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.

He said 234,000 metric tonnes of durians were exported during this period, with China accounting for 73% of the demand.

This amounted to RM3.79bil for 81,000 metric tonnes of fresh and frozen durian.

Singapore came in second with exports valued at RM414.82mil, followed by Hong Kong (RM333.82mil), the United States (RM179.11mil) and Australia (RM169.88mil).

Mohamad said continuous efforts were taken to penetrate new markets, while strengthening existing ones.

“The Agriculture Department was also negotiating with the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) to export fresh whole fruit durians to the republic,” he said in a parliamentary written reply yesterday.

He said Malaysia had also penetrated markets in 41 countries.
