Five cops plead not guilty to extorting motorist of RM4,500


BUKIT MERTAJAM: Five policemen charged with extorting money from a motorist in Permatang Tinggi have claimed trial at the magistrate's court here.

The five of them aged between 24 and 48 were charged with extorting RM4,500 from a 27-year-old man by claiming to have found drugs in the car during an inspection in Jalan Permatang Tinggi at 10.15pm on Feb 1.

The accused arrived together in a police truck at 8.35am on Friday (Feb 9) before being charged before Magistrate Nurul Rasyidah Mohd Akit.

All five pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Nurul Rasyidah then set March 15 for next mention of the case and for submission of documents.

If convicted, the offence under Section 384 of the Penal Code for extortion carries a maximum jail term of 10 years or a fine, or with caning, or with any two of such punishments.
