SEPANG: Three suspected drug mules were arrested before they could smuggle methamphetamines worth nearly RM1.23mil to Sarawak.

The 36.53kg of drugs were seized after police arrested a married couple and their friend at a condominium parking lot on Jan 24.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the suspects were supposed to board a noon flight to Miri that day.

“We got wind of this attempt after a man was caught upon arriving in Miri on the same day with 25kg of methamphetamines.

“The suspect was interogated by Miri police and they passed on the information to us,” he told reporters yesterday.

Investigations revealed that the three were paid at least RM10,000 per trip.

“They had already made two successful trips last year but this time they were caught.

“The drugs were placed in luggage bags meant to be checked in before their noon flight,” he said.

When asked, Comm Hussein said they believed this case is connected to another one on Jan 21.

In that case, two drug mules were arrested for attempting to smuggle methamphetamines worth more than RM500,000 to Sarawak.

“Based on our investigations, the modus operandi matches the case that was detected by KLIA police three days earlier.

“We believe the drugs came from a neighbouring country up north and we are now working to identify who hired these suspects to be drug mules,” he said.

Meanwhile, Comm Hussein said police also arrested four suspects and seized ganja worth RM33,000 on Jan 25.

“A team from Bukit Aman arrested three men in front of a petrol station along the Kuala Lumpur Karak Expressway near Gombak around 5pm.

“During the arrest, they seized 10.5kg of ganja. Another male suspect was arrested in a follow-up operation in Ampang on the same day,” he said, adding that all four suspects have prior records for criminal and drug offences.
