Nurse loses RM125, 000 in love scam

ALOR GAJAH: A 30-year-old nurse at a public hospital became RM125,000 poorer after falling for a love scam.

Alor Gajah OCPD Supt Arshad Abu said the victim, a single mother, was fleeced by a man she befriended through TikTok on Sept 29.

Supt Arshad said the suspect had promised to send expensive gifts to the victim through a courier service and promised to marry her.

"However, on Oct 8, the victim received a call from a courier service representative demanding a slew of ridiculous payments, including stamp and excise duties," he said on Wednesday (Oct 18).

Supt Arshad said from Oct 8 to Oct 15, the victim took out personal loans and borrowed from her friends to pay for the duties to receive the gift.

He said the victim deposited the total amount in 12 transactions into four separate bank accounts that were provided to her.

Supt Arshad said the victim failed to receive the gift and felt cheated before lodging a police report at Alor Gajah police headquarters on Tuesday(Oct 17).

He added the report is currently being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
