Thief fails to steal jewellery worth RM23,000, gets beaten up on street

KOTA TINGGI: A 27-year-old man failed to steal some necklaces from a jewellery store here and was apprehended on the street by passers-by.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora said that the incident occurred at 6pm on Monday (Oct 16).

"The suspect pretended he wanted to buy two necklaces worth RM23,000 from the jewellery store in Plaza Kota Tinggi on Jalan Mawai before running away.

"He, however, was caught by the public in front of a supermarket near the area," he said when contacted on Tuesday (Oct 17).

The stolen jewellery was returned to the shop owner before the suspect was handed over to the police.

The case was investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft.

"The suspect was sentenced to six months' jail by the Kota Tinggi Magistrate's Court on Tuesday (Oct 17)," he added.

Earlier, a one-minute video was posted on X, showing a man being held in the street and beaten up.
