KOTA KINABALU: Eighteen people have been rounded up by Labuan police after a brawl which erupted during a futsal match.

Initial investigations found that the fight was due to provocation between the supporters and players, said acting Labuan police chief Deputy Supt Robin @ Ridzuan Ismail.

“One person suffered head injuries,” he said.

He said the fight took place outside a futsal court located at Jalan Tanjung Purun.

“We have detained 18 local men, aged between 17 and 32. They have been remanded for three days,” he said in a statement yesterday.

DSP Ridzuan urged witnesses to come forward to help in the probe.

Investigations were being carried out in accordance with Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.

He warned that those found guilty under this law could face a jail term of up to two years or fine, or both.

“Those involved in sports are advised to have sportsmanship and to maintain harmony regardless of race and religion.”

A brief footage of the brawl was circulated on social media on Saturday.
