Woman finds out lover is a conman while holidaying with him

SERDANG: A 36-year-old woman lost more than RM18,000 after she was duped by her lover.

Serdang OCPD Asst Comm A.A. Anbalagan said the victim got to know the 44-year-old suspect via X (formerly known as Twitter) in May.

"They got to know each other and the suspect claimed that he was working in an international oil and gas company.

"They eventually became lovers and that is when the suspect started to ask for loans over a period of time, totalling RM18,800," he said when contacted on Tuesday (Oct 3).

It is learnt that the suspect came up with dramatic excuses to ask for the loans.

The victim and the suspect eventually went on vacation in Cherating, Kuantan on Sept 29, he said.

"Suspecting something amiss, the victim searched the suspect's belongings and discovered that his name and other personal details on his MyKad were different from what he told her.

"She did an online search and discovered that the suspect had previously duped other women by becoming their lover," he said.

ACP Anbalagan said the victim alerted the police and the suspect was subsequently detained.

"The suspect was then handed over to Serdang police for further investigation.

"He has been remanded until Wednesday (Oct 4)," he added.

Investigation showed that the suspect would target women on social media and portray himself as a rich businessman before asking for loans, he said.

"We urge others who have been duped by the suspect to lodge a police report as soon as possible," he said.
