New leadership line-up voted in for MCA Wanita, Youth wings

KUALA LUMPUR: The 2023 MCA party election has seen a new leadership line-up for its Wanita and Youth wings in the early hours of Sunday (Sept 24).

Party secretary-general Datuk Chong Sin Woon (pic) announced that Wong You Fong has defended her position as Wanita MCA chairman, while Ling Tian Soon emerged as the new MCA Youth chief.

Wong had 281 electoral votes, beating her opponent Datuk Ooi Siew Kim who received 98.

Wanita deputy chief Tee Hooi Ling received no challengers, while four candidates for the Wanita vice-chairpersons posts also won uncontested. They are Loh Siew Ying, Tan Choo Kuan, Tham Fong Kiew and Liew Kim Moy.

For the Youth wing, Ling won a three-cornered fight against Daniel Wa Wai How and Bernard Chan Kee Siang.

The Yong Peng assemblyman and Johor health and unity committee chairman, had 130 electoral votes against Wa with 58 while Chan received none.

His teammate Mike Chong Yew Chuan secured the deputy MCA Youth chief's post with 132 electoral votes against Nian Yien, who garnered 56 votes.

Also elected were 25 central committee members for both the Wanita and Youth wings.

Wanita MCA recorded a 47.76% voter turnout, where 7,794 of 18,506 delegates voted.

MCA Youth, on the other hand, achieved a 42.12% voter turnout, with 2,382 of its 4,987 delegates voted.

The election of the party’s main body is later on Sunday (Sept 24), with results expected at night.

This is the second party election conducted under the new enlarged delegate mechanism or electoral voting system after it was introduced and passed in an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) in 2016.

In the past, the central committee was elected by about 2,400 central delegates during the party election, which is held every three years during its annual general meeting (AGM).

With the enlarged delegate mechanism, the party expanded the election of MCA’s echelon to the divisional delegates, which now number more than 52,000 members nationwide.

Chong, announced the official results at 1am on Sunday (Sept 24) and congratulated the winners.

He then called on everyone to close ranks and reunite to strengthen the party as a team.

“I hope the new Wanita and Youth leadership line-up will help the party achieve new milestones and successes,” he said.

All winners will begin their terms after the party’s AGM on Oct 21 and Oct 22.
