PM Anwar hails by-election wins as positive development for unity govt


PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan's victory in the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections is a positive development for the unity government, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that this would help the government to ensure the people's economic and development agenda is achieved.

“Congratulations to Suhaizan Kayat and Nazri Abdul Rahman who won the Pulai parliamentary by-election and the Simpang Jeram state assembly seat respectively.

“My appreciation goes to all the voters who are confident in the efforts of the unity government in developing the country,” said the Pakatan Harapan chairman.

Amanah's Suhaizan got a total of 48,283 votes while his opponent, Zulkifli Jaafar from Perikatan Nasional secured 29,642 votes.

Nazri, also from Amanah, received 13,844 votes while his opponent, Perikatan’s Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya got 10,330 votes.

Of the two Independent candidates, Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi only got 465 votes in Pulai and S. Jeganathan got 311 votes in Simpang Jeram. Both lost their deposits.

However, voter turnout in these two by-elections was as low as 47.33% in Pulai and 60.85% in Simpang Jeram.

In the last general election, voter turnout in Pulai was 71% and in the state polls, it was 53.4% in Simpang Jeram.
