Ranau police round up 10 students in bullying case

KOTA KINABALU: Police have arrested 10 teenagers in connection with a viral video clip of a group of secondary school students bullying their schoolmates in the Ranau district about 120km from here.

Ranau police deputy chief Supt Simiun Lomudin said initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred after the victims were caught vaping in the school dormitory.

He said the incident occurred on Aug 3 and the video clip went viral on social media on Friday (Sept 1).

"It is believed that the group who assaulted the victims were upset as the incident caused problems for other students staying at the hostel," he said on Saturday (Sept 2).

He said five boys were arrested on Friday and the rest on Saturday.

"The students are aged from 15 to 17," he said.

DSP Simiun said the boys were in police lock-up and would be released on bail after investigations are completed.

He added the case was being probed under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 506 of the same law for criminal intimidation.

A police report on the incident was lodged at 3.30pm on Friday.

In the five-minute video clip, at least four boys were seen being slapped and punched by a group of boys surrounding them.
