Law sworn in for third term as Penang Speaker

GEORGE TOWN: Sworn in for a third term, state assembly Speaker Datuk Law Choo Kiang says he will carry out his duties while taking into account the trust bestowed on him.

The state PKR advisor added that he will carry out his duties as the state Speaker honestly and ensure all the rules of the assembly are always upheld.

Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz, meanwhile, was appointed as deputy state speaker.

He then congratulated those who were elected on receiving the mandate of the people to represent them and their interests.

"I hope all of you will always act in accordance with the rules of the assembly with integrity and respect regardless of political or party views," he said before being sworn in at the State Legislative Assembly building here, in George Town, Penang on Tuesday (Aug 29).

Earlier, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow suggested that Law be made the Speaker and was met with no opposition.

"He has confirmed that he is willing to carry out his duties as the state Speaker if chosen," Chow said.

All 40 Penang assemblymen are taking their oath of office at the State Legislative Assembly on Tuesday (Aug 29).

In the Aug 12 state polls, the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional alliance won 29 seats while Perikatan Nasional grabbed 11 seats.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is the state Pakatan chairman, was then sworn in as the Chief Minister for his second term.
