Foreigner who escaped Prisons Dept facility in Mantin recaptured three hours later

SEREMBAN: A 31-year-old foreigner who escaped from the Prisons Department’s community reintegration centre in Mantin near here was recaptured three hours later along the Kajang-Seremban Expressway.

Nilai police chief Supt Abdul Malik Hasim said police received information that the prisoner had escaped from the centre around 6.55pm Monday (Aug 28).

"The man had been sentenced to serve 10 years in jail and ordered to be caned five times by the Temerloh Sessions Court for a crime committed under sections 395 and 397 of the Penal Code in 2017.

"He was brought to the centre on June 19 and was due to be deported on Sept 9," he said in a statement.

Supt Abdul Malik said the police and Prisons Department launched a manhunt as soon as they got news of his escape.

The man was caught along KM29 of the expressway which was about 2km away from the centre at around 10pm the same day.

Police, he said, obtained an order to remand the man for four days from the Magistrate's Court here Tuesday (Aug 29) morning.

The case is being probed under Section 223 and 224 of the Penal Code.
