Discussing green investment towards a circular economy

AS regulation, technology and consumer demand push society towards a more sustainable economy, companies these days have a golden opportunity to achieve greater economic growth and investment opportunities by transforming their business into a circular model that is both sustainable and profitable.

On Aug 15, Star Media Group’s Circular Economy Conference (CEC) will return for its third year. In partnership with UOB as the event’s platinum sponsor, this year’s theme, “Green Investment Towards a Circular Economy,” aims to encourage participants to invest in cutting-edge technologies or systems – for example, in waste management – in line with Malaysia’s sustainability goals and aspirations towards Net Zero by 2050.

The one-day live virtual conference will feature 25 speakers from globally recognised businesses, and our esteemed keynote speaker will be Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming.

Listen to like-minded thought leaders as they share their expertise on building a circular economy that looks beyond the mass production of products and rather seeks to redefine growth where resources will be utilised to their fullest potential, thereby reducing waste and enhancing energy efficiency.

The circular model builds economic, natural and social capital based on three principles to cultivate green practices: designing out waste and pollution; keeping products and materials in use for as long as possible; and regenerating natural systems.

It is important to build an organisation-specific roadmap implementation strategy with a vision and tangible action steps tailored to the organisation’s unique context.

“From a micro standpoint, when businesses adopt circular practices, they can enhance resource efficiency, reduce costs and drive innovation for their own operations,” said UOB Malaysia wholesale banking managing director and country head Andy Cheah (pic), who sees environmental, social and governance (ESG) as a market-leading framework.

UOB has been working with Star Media Group to consolidate the driving financial practices and solutions to achieve the nation’s net-zero goal by 2050.

Considering global issues, market realities and stakeholder expectations, UOB is committed to upholding the sustainability pillars of Driving Growth Sustainably; Keeping Customers at the Centre; Developing Professionals of Principle; and Upholding Corporate Responsibility.

“The CEC helps to create awareness and drives the message that benefits are abundant when companies invest in a circular economy, and that financial solutions and incentives are available for businesses who want to begin their sustainability journey,” he said.

UOB has developed one of the most comprehensive and market-leading financing frameworks and solutions. This framework supports companies that are contributing to the creation of smart cities, construction of green buildings, facilitating green trade, transitioning away from energy-intensive, brown and ‘hard-to-abate sectors’, and creating a circular economy.

“The Green Financing for Circular Economy Framework supports companies in the 3R (renew, reuse and reduce) business and carries a Second Party Opinion from Moody’s.

“This financing framework can apply to companies involved in activities such as plastics, metals and electronics waste recycling,” added Cheah.

During the conference, participants will learn how to:

* Foster a platform for an exchange of trailblazing innovations and ideas

* Shine a limelight on the increasing focus on green financing

* Encourage corporates to understand the importance and benefits of implementing circular economy policies via green financing

CEC 2023 is part of Star Media Group’s educational initiative, aimed towards pushing forward the ESG agenda and how green financing supports the mission to a circular economy, tailored for organisations or businesses.

Join hands with us as we embark on this green journey to build a framework for tackling global sustainability challenges.
