Umno working to seek justice for Najib, says Zahid


PUTRAJAYA: Umno is continuously working to seek justice for jailed former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak (pic), says its president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He added that what the party is doing should be an internal matter and said that it does not need to be discussed with the public.

Dr Ahmad Zahid had said on Thursday (July 13) that Najib had reminded Umno members not to fall into the trap of its enemies trying to use him to divide the party.

He said Najib's advice to the party on the matter was also raised by his son Datuk Nizar during the Umno general assembly.

During the party's annual meeting last month, Najib's eldest son had said that his father had never asked Umno members to attack the unity government.

Denying such claims, Nizar said his father had actually demanded for party members to remain loyal to the party and the presidential institution.

Several news reports had quoted Najib's other son, Datuk Naziffudin saying that his father's supporters might not go out to vote in the coming six state elections.

He claimed that this was their way of protesting as they felt that Umno was not doing much to seek justice for the former president.

In July 2020, Najib was convicted and sentenced for charges involving criminal breach of trust (CBT), money laundering and abuse of position involving SRC funds, totalling RM42mil.

Najib was fined RM210mil and is currently serving a 12-year jail sentence.
